W.C. Fields' films donated to the Rwanda Cinema Center/Kwetu Film Institute. On Sunday, August 12, 2012, under the stars, two W.C. Fields' films were screened in Kigali, Rwanda. Dr. Harriet Fields shared with the audience that her grandfather performed in Africa, and said, “I am very happy for our grandfather to have a home in Africa, for Kwetu means Home in Swahili.” A magical experience for all, many attendees said they will remember the night forever. Eric Kabera, founder of the Kwetu Film Institute, said he wants to teach his students how to do comedy, so they and the country can laugh again. Eric shared that W.C. Fields' comic genius is unmatched in the world today.
Rwanda has suffered so much in the genocide of 1994. The world little knows of the depths of the pain and the heights at reconciliation and healing. W.C. Fields said, “If I can make them laugh, and through that laughter make this old world seem just a little brighter, then I am satisfied.” Laughter is truly the best medicine of all. Earlier in the week, Dr. Fields donated DVDs of W.C. Fields' films to the Kwetu Film Institute developing film Library for the students and Eric Kabera donated to the W.C. Fields' family his award winning documentaries on Rwanda. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences put Dr. Harriet Fields and Eric Kabera, founder of the Kwetu Film Institute, in contact, for the Rwanda Cinema Center is part of the Academy's International Outreach program.
